How does your broadband use compare to other families?

Data released by Chorus in the last summer holidays showed:

  • A 36 percent increase in data consumption in January 2020 compared with the previous January.
  • School holidays lead to marked shift in peak usage patterns. During term time there is a clear peak at 4pm when they come home, but when they’re on holiday you can see more consistent use through the day. The biggest different is at 10am which is nearly 30 percent higher than when kids are at school.
  • Happily – there is a clear drop in usage when the sun comes out, so we can see that kids still like to play outside too.

How is your home broadband holding up during the school holidays?

Kids complaining about slow internet at home? If your broadband is struggling to keep up with increased demand it may be time to consider upgrading your connection type, or upgrading your plan.

Ensuring that you’re on a fibre broadband connection is the first step to improving your broadband. If it’s available at your address, fibre broadband is a great choice. Independent testing by the Commerce Commission shows that fibre broadband is faster, more reliable, more responsive and more consistent than competing technologies.

If you take a few moments to shop around and compare plans with Broadband Compare, you’re likely to find a cheaper plan too. Getting fibre installed in your residential property is usually free and Hundred and thousands of Kiwis are already enjoying New Zealand’s most popular type of broadband connection.

An informed choice about broadband plans for families

The good news is that there are simple steps you can take today to protect your family online and avoid screen-time stress. Check our top tips for dealing with screen time and top tips for protecting children online.

Plus, you can upgrade your connection today so you don’t spend another school holiday suffering with a poor broadband connection.
