Here at Broadband Compare NZ we are all about making life easier for consumers and businesses to understand and compare broadband plans and internet providers in NZ... we also like to decipher and translate big government decisions like this one from the Commerce Commission into language that everyone can understand... So... what does this mean to the kiwi consumer and broadband plans in New Zealand?
In summary... your broadband bill will very likely see a increase. Not a huge monthly increase but with Chorus being able to charge Spark Broadband, Compass Broadband, Vodafone Broadband and many other internet providers in NZ an additional $7.11 per month to send their broadband connection down the Chorus copper pipes you can be pretty sure that some or all of that cost will be passed on to the end bill payer... i.e. you... the New Zealand Broadband user.
According to Chorus, the Copper network access price increase will mean that they will be able to bill an incredible, $120 million a year to the broadband providers in NZ, over 5 years that is $600 million extra... the bulk of which YOU will pay for.
So... surely there has never been a better time to compare broadband plans and compare internet providers in NZ and switch your broadband provider?
Internet NZ, has called the broadband price decision a travesty and has pointed out that New Zealand is the only country in the world putting up copper pricing for broadband plans. New Zealanders pay more for fixed broadband plans than most developed countries and independent research (from the International Telecommunications Union) which compares internet plans and broadband prices put us in the 60th place in the world... even over the ditch in Australia they are twenty places ahead of New Zealand. This broadband plan price increase for copper connections will push us even further down the rankings as the NZ broadband providers will have to put their prices up.
There are 1.33 million copper internet connections in New Zealand. This is an increase of one percent from 2014 according to Stats NZ when they surveyed internet providers in NZ.
Ultrafast Fiber Broadband or Fibre connections have more than doubled from 46,000 in 2014 to 105,000 at the end of 2015 but they still only make up about five per cent of all broadband connections in New Zealand. Even Spark, one of the old guard of internet providers in New Zealand said that when you compare internet plans in New Zealand they their customers will now pay more for access to the ADSL copper broadband network than they do for entry-level plans on Ultrafast Broadband (UFB) fibre.
If you are a Spark Broadband customer, a Compass Broadband customer or a Vodafone Broadband customer on a residential fixed line service you will more than likely be seeing an increase on your ADSL or VDSL connections by around $5 a month from February or March 2016. Interestingly and correctly, prices are unchanged for landline only customers and also for fibre broadband customers, including Ultrafast Broadband users.
So... you've read enough? $5 a month for a year is $60. For two years that's $120 - that's a chunk of change I would rather have in my pocket.
Many of the broadband providers in New Zealand offer great incentives for new customers. Switching is a simple and easy process and sometimes your new bill and the incentive will save you even more than the early exit fee that you may have to pay if under contract.
